Khmer Rouge Gaoler Sentenced

Kaing Guek Eav (Duch) has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The sentence was reduced by 11 years in compensation for the time Duch spent in pre-trial detention and five years in recognition of his co-operation with the court, so he will spend 19 years in prison.

Mixed Economic News

The World Bank has predicted that Cambodia's economy will grow 4.4% in 2010. The Asian Development Bank forecast economic growth of 4.5% this year and 6% in 2011.

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction released figures showing the value of construction projects approved by the government in the first quarter of 2010 plummeted by 82.6%, when compared to the same period of 2009.

The National Bank of Cambodia has had to step in to support the Riel, which had fallen to its lowest level against the US dollar for three years.

In the first quarter of 2010 garment exports recovered to $603 million, compared to $562 million in the same period last year, while tourist arrivals increased by 10% for the same period.
