Some Background Information

Our History

The Khmer School of Language was founded in 1993 by Mrs Agnes Verner as an extension of the language programme being run by SAO Cambodia.

The school became an autonomous self-governing body on 10 June 1997 and is today run by Ms Addheka SengBou (Executive Director), assisted by Mrs Leaksmy Rebok (Dean of Studies) and Mrs Brenda Au (Adviser).

Our Mission

To provide a centre of language and cultural enrichment for expatriates and nationals, as well as a place of training and employment opportunities for nationals.

Our Objectives

  • To facilitate expatriates in the study of the Khmer Language.
  • To raise awareness of Cambodian culture among expatriates.
  • To provide work for Cambodians by training them to teach Khmer to expatriates.

Some Statistics

KSL staff
  • The school employs 23 staff, of whom 14 are women.
  • From 1993 to the present day nearly 1,400 students of more than 30 nationalities have studied with us.
  • Students study from one to four hours per day over a period ranging from one day to two years.
  • Based on the experience of a long-term language consultant, a student needs to study three hours a day for six months to gain a basic working knowledge of the Khmer language.
