The KSL Aid Project of Mercy

History

Prek Ho youth group

The youth group at West Prek Ho worships every Sunday

In 2002 we established the KSL Mercy Home Project as one of our initiatives to help poor Cambodian people. The project was set up by KSL's founder, Mrs Agnes Verner, in consultation with Ms Addheka SengBou, Executive Director of KSL, and Mrs Leaksmy Rebok, Dean of Studies. The project has evolved into the KSL Aid Project of Mercy (APM).

Mr Daniel Stivey donated US$4,500 in order to buy land for the Mercy Home Project in West Prek Ho Village, Prek Ho Commune, Takhmau District, Kandal Province. This was Mercy Home Number 1.

Ms Addheka SengBou donated US$30,000 in order to buy land for another Mercy Home Project in Sras Keo Village, Melum Commune, Baribo District, Kampong Chhnang Province. The donation was sufficient to buy both agricultural land and a site for fellowship activities. This was Mercy Home Number 2, which has been supporting the local community since 2007.

God has blessed and provided for our ministry to serve poor people through gifts from friends and missionaries.

The Aid Project of Mercy has expanded to reach people in Battambang, Takeo, Kampot and Kampong Speu provinces and Phnom Penh and Preah Sihanouk municipalities.

Sewing

The Aid Project of Mercy runs three- and six-month courses in sewing for widows and young women who live in the seven provinces served by APM. The courses provide them with a skill that will improve their prospects of finding employment and raising their standard of living. Each course is provided free of charge to the participants. Several hundreds of women who have completed the course have secured jobs in garment factories; others are using their skills independently to supplement their families' incomes.

International Co-operation

Youth teams from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and France, have joined with APM in seven provinces for fellowship and practical projects such as planting crops, rebuilding wooden houses, teaching English, training in technical skills and teaching computer classes. Please contact us if you are interested in organising a similar visit for a group that you lead.

Future Plans

Our future plans include the holding of short English language courses and providing resources to improve the standard of education of children who live in the villages. We also look forward to the establishment of churches that will provide fellowship and Bible teaching for the people of West Prek Ho in Kandal province (Mercy Home 1) and Sras Keo village in Kampong Chhnang (Mercy Home 2).

We also plan to help farmers by providing land on which they can plant rice to support their families.

Please contact us if you would be interested in sponsoring a sewing trainee (US$50 per trainee), a child's education (US$50 per year) or a young person's university course (US$450 per year).

Other Initiatives

  • We run training courses which teach widows and young women to produce handicrafts.
  • We have provided study materials and uniforms for school children.
  • We have made available land for rice cultivation and distributed rice to poor families
  • We have distributed food and rice to poor families.
  • We have provided food and medicines for families who scavenge on the Phnom Penh municipal rubbish dump.
  • We plan to provide the fees for needy young people to study at university.
  • We intend to offer leadership training to young people and help them find employment.
  • We plan to help poor people to generate an income from raising chickens and cultivating mushrooms, and help them market their produce.
