Cambodian Communities out of Crisis

First-Fruits

In 1996 the Director and Treasurer of Cambodian Communities out of Crisis were nearing the end of a visit to Cambodia. They were sitting in a café, pondering where God was leading CCC. Did the organisation have any future? They got into conversation with another customer, and she planted a suggestion in their minds: 'Have you considered helping some of the thousands of young Cambodians who want to go to college but cannot afford to do so?'

CCC had no funds in Cambodia, but the two visitors had just enough money between them to pay for three young men to take a foundation course in 'Working Internationally' at Regent College (now Regent School of Business).

CCC honours those three men as the first-fruits of an educational sponsorship programme that has continued to this day.

Saroeuth went on to study English at Australian Centre for Education and is now in business. He is an elder of the Living Hope in Christ Church.

Mao completed a degree at the National Institute (now National University) of Management and gained management experience in a garment factory. He is now living in Canada.

Vuthy studied further modules at Regent College and Australian Centre for Education. He helped to set up and became manager of Cambodia's first Christian bookshop. He now runs his own business as a tourist guide. Vuthy has an amazing testimony of how God preserved him from death at the hands of the Khmer Rouge and has provided for him until today.

A continuing harvest

Where to go next

Try these links:

CCC has gone on to sponsor over 70 other students to take a variety of courses leading to qualifications ranging from a certificate of competence in sewing to a Master of Business Administration.

CCC has also begun to sponsor children of school-age. We currently pay a portion of the fees for two Cambodian children to study at schools offering an international-standard curriculum. We are also raising funds to enable children who formerly scavenged on Phnom Penh's municipal rubbish dump to go to school.

We may have been able to help only a tiny fraction of the Cambodian young people and children who so desperately need and want a good-quality education, but we have made a difference to the lives of some, and our vision is for a Christian college that will help many, many more.
